Medical Shelter and Care
Our Medical Director -- Dr. Nancy Rodriguez – has dedicated herself to serving the colonias communities. She lives in Matamoros and is present in the colonias served by Casa Bugambilia each day. Dr. Nancy has provided medical services to colonia residents since 1997. Visits by volunteer medical doctors, nurses, dentists, and physical and speech therapists help Dr. Nancy provide high quality health care to colonias residents. Dr. Nancy also helps colonia residents with complex medical problems to receive specialized medical care.
Currently, the Casa Bugambilia facility in the Derechos Humanos colonia is being expanded to serve as an albergue to shelter and care for up to 20 ill and abandoned persons, and also as a center for other medical services, such as diabetes treatment, clinic services, physical therapy and pharmacy needs.
Our Medical Mission
Establishing an exceptional medical mission at Casa Bugambilia dedicated to medical care in five principal areas:
Shelter and care for ill and abandoned persons to allow them medical treatment with dignity and reunification with their family and home community when possible.
Comprehensive treatment of diabetes and chronic conditions to alleviate suffering and prevent complicating conditions.
Medical consulting to those without access to quality medical care and regular preventative health campaigns.
Facilitating the treatment of young people with special physical or psychological needs.
Facilitating specialized treatment for complex cases.
The number varies from day to day, but usually about 10 patients were being sheltered at the Casa Bugambilia albergue in the summer of 2009 with medical problems caused by untreated diabetes, cancer or neurological disorders. Some were severely injured or paralyzed from accidents or burns.
One of them is Ignacio, who has lived on the streets under bridges since he was 5 years old. His is a case of over five decades of abandonment, whose untreated diabetes causes great pain. Since coming to Casa Bugambilia, he has received treatment – care for his infected wounds, but also acceptance into a healing community.
