$20 – Medical consultation and medicine for a colonia resident
$80 - Treatment for a person with diabetes for one week
$120 – One week of care for an albergue patient
$3,000 -- A decent timber frame or concrete block home for a family living in a shack
Diabetes Prevention and Treatment
Evidence of the problems of untreated diabetes in Matamoros abounds. It is difficult to cross a main intersection without finding a man or woman begging from a wheelchair. They are usually missing one or both legs.
In June of 2009, we informally reviewed suspected cases of diabetes for people living in the colonias. There were 89 people needing treatment out of 125 tested. In response, Casa Bugambilia is increasing efforts to provide a comprehensive treatment program for those presently untreated for diabetes. This will be a first for Matamoros.

The program will include nutrition, education, exercise facilities and medical care. When the expanded care facility is complete, there will be capacity to serve 150 diabetes outpatients and the level of care in the areas of diet, wound care, exercise, stress management, education and application of medicines will be greatly increased. Each patient will also be involved in managing their own diabetes.
